About the Project
For Make Up For Ever’s high-energy Soho gallery opening and product launch celebrating the New Super Boost Skin Tint & Lip Gloss, I designed a lighting scheme that seamlessly married industrial- chic gallery aesthetics with professional-grade cosmetic precision. The primary objective was to deliver absolute skin tone fidelity and a photography-ready environment.
In the expansive main gallery space, clean overhead track lighting illuminated the high ceilings, architectural trusses, and central design features—including a sleek corrugated metallic bar and a center-stage silver punching bag ring. To accurately showcase the product’s diverse shade range, beautifully represented by a gradient wall of boxing gloves, we utilized crisp, balanced ambient washes against the white gallery walls to maintain perfect color temperature and eliminate glare.
The makeup application zones required a strict focus on technical utility. Across the extensive testing stations, we integrated high-CRI linear task lighting directly above the mirrors. This guaranteed a shadow-free, high-fidelity environment, empowering makeup artists to accurately match, blend, and showcase the skin tint textures in ideal light.
To contrast the clean utility of the testing stations, we injected playful high-impact branding into the experiential zones. Inside the custom locker vignettes, we applied nuanced color treatments to the existing units while complementing them with traditional film lighting techniques. This hybrid approach created dramatic, deeply textured, and highly photogenic moments around curated props and branded stickers, delivering a comprehensive 360-degree approach optimized for both the immersive guest experience and interactive takeaways.
Every detail of the exhibition was carefully balanced, ensuring that even intricate experiential elements, like the massive keychain product wall, were beautifully and evenly lit. By color testing and separating clean, high-CRI functional light from dynamic thematic accent.
