About the Project
Working closely under the creative and production direction of the teams at Dizon Inc. and BLT Productions, I developed technical drawings to ensure the lighting was functionally integrated into the shelving units. This provided essential task lighting while enhancing the overall atmosphere, ensuring that both the models and products were viewed and captured exactly as desired. The product, set, models, and support staff all required careful curation to allow the specific color scheme to be properly presented and experienced. A primary objective of the design process was ensuring the lighting acted as a natural vessel that allowed the presentation to take form. Consequently, a great deal of effort went into discussing, testing, and determining which light quality would fully support the creative director’s vision for the color scheme, how guests would experience the product, and how it would be captured by the media.
The technical aspects of the design explored the use of multiple light sources (LED and fluorescent), their reliability for a semi-permanent installation, the frequency of the emitted light, and the color DNA behind the white light source that ultimately reveals the characteristics and details of the product’s various materials.
To resolve the overall approach to the lighting—specifically where to put the lights and for what purpose—I integrated hidden LED ribbon sources into the top-edge shelving surrounding the space, providing a directional light to support the visual merchandisers’ efforts. Overhead, I created custom lightboxes with fluorescent fixtures to blanket the space with light, providing an architectural ceiling over an otherwise blank industrial roof structure.
A daylight color temperature was selected, and a high-CRI LED ribbon along with full-spectrum fluorescent tubes were implemented to ensure color quality was upheld. Because the fluorescent light was altered by a beige diffuser material, the light source took on a green cast that would ultimately gray the pink tones in the various materials. To correct this, a layer of pink color correction was applied to eliminate the issue.
