About the Project
To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Nike Air Max and launch the groundbreaking Air VaporMax, Nike hosted a members-only pop-up event called “SNEAKEASY.” The space was transformed into an experiential to usher in the “future of air.” Executed in collaboration with Blue Revolver, the design centered on creating a high-contrast, immersive environment. The lighting was crucial in sculpting the atmosphere across both distinct spaces. The experience began in the Archive Hallway, which featured historic Air Max models, including the original Tailwind 1979, displayed inside suspended, clear cylindrical chambers. To create a dramatic, artifact-focused atmosphere, the ambient light was kept extremely low, utilizing internal illumination within the display capsules to make the shoes glow against the black backdrop. This technique isolated the footwear, maximizing the visual impact of the artifacts and emphasizing the concept of “visible air” innovation. The experience culminated in the VaporMax Immersion Room, an immersive gallery dedicated to the new Air VaporMax. This space featured mirror-clad walls and a highly reflective, glass-paneled floor. The lighting design here shifted to a high-tech, futuristic aesthetic built on strategic use of reflection: integrated linear asymetical washes with light strips within the floor panels to create a dynamic wrap of scenic treatments. Additonally, precise, white spotlighting from above was directed onto the white product pedestals. This intentional lighting scheme, coupled with the surrounding mirrored surfaces, generated an “infinity room” effect. This intense, multiplied light was essential for conveying the weightless, revolutionary nature of the VaporMax, and projecting an ultra-modern feel for the launch.
